New and Used Car Porter

Job Description:

An auto porter is essentially a jack-of-all trades or handyman at a car dealership. While the specific duties may vary a bit, the general role of the porter is to help the manager ensure that all cars on the lot are well-maintained, in excellent working condition and clean for effective merchandising to customers.

Lot Presentation

Often before working on individual cars, the porter helps to get the lot in clean and marketable condition. In all-weather climates, the porter has the responsibility for debris cleanup. Porters may also power wash the car lot and surrounding sidewalks periodically to pick up any dirt and grime. The general manager may also have the porter periodically move or rearrange vehicles for sales or for lot reorganization.

Other Duties

Much of the rest of what porters do falls into the category of "other duties as assigned." At dealerships with service departments, the porter may move vehicles into and out of the service garage. Porters also commonly place materials into vehicles before they are place on the car lot. These include car manuals, sale tags, dealer place mats and air fresheners. The porter may also help run errands for car registration and supply pick-ups
